Hey zack, I am trying to consolidate a few of my wallets into one using
159.89.106.253:8080/wallet.html. i am trying to send the entire balance of the wallet but when i click spend, the tx doent seem to go through (balance remains/veo not received). Could this be because the sending fee is coming from the wallet and so i dont have enough for the transaction?
03:36
Zack
Yes that could be why.
Fee is like 0.00152 Veo.
It could also be that you didn't wait long enough for the tx to be included in a block.
03:37

Ok will try subtracting the fee before i send and waiting. Thank you for the help!

yes, it deletes the account and sends the money to the pubkey

the api accepts either format for the pubkey.

delete account deletes your account.
api:pubkey displays the pubkey for your account.

==============
Wars happen because the warlords can divide us up, teaching each half a different narrative until we hate each other.
Both narratives are almost completely unrelated to reality.
Since the warlords control the propaganda machine, it is a lot of effort to realize what is going on.
Prediction markets allow us to easily disprove both narratives. So that looking up whether a narrative is true is as simple as looking up the price of shares of Amazon stock.
We have a moral imperative to get this technology working. millions of lives are at stake over the next decade.
Once we stop wasting resources on war, quality of life will improve for billions of people.
Together we can build a better future.

Thank you Zack, can't calculate number of days
23:22
Zack
At 10 minutes per block, 1000 blocks is about 1 week.
23:23
Historically amoveo blocks take less than 5 minutes, because mining power is growing all the time.
23:24
Al

1000$ per VEO π
23:37
Zack
Difficulty adjusts every 2000 blocks to try and make it 10 minutes per block.
23:38
O K
(so if the block time stays (about) 10 mins after this recent adjustment, the difficulty will stay (about) the same... Usually more hashpower comes online though)
23:38
Al
So it can be lower if there will be less miners? No static diff adjustment - like from block 1-100 is 10%, 2-3000 this one
23:39
Sy
diff is always variable
23:39
Zack
Right.
If more miners join, the difficulty goes up.
If miners turn off, the difficulty could go down.
The difficulty has never gone down so far.
23:39
Sy
it tries to make sure you generate the same amount of coins over a certain time
23:40
target blocktime is 10 minutes, if the avg of 2000 blocks is lower, it goes up, otherwise down
23:40
Al
If I remember correctly it is no the case for ETH - there is some kind of formula - not dependent on miner hash and count

19:23
Sy
na, i want you to accept to leave things that are out of your reach or knowledge untouched and concentrate on what you can do
19:24
Zack
At this point Phantom huongs miner is becoming a centralizing influence. It stops anyone from wanting to make a mining pool, since no miner can join any other pool besides the one Phantom huong chose.
19:24
Sy
there were always closed source miners and pools and there always will be, someone put work into those to usually make a living, patching that out is just wrong

We are also in the process of making our own much faster CUDA miner, but have been to busy with other things to complete it. Having all pools supply a standardized API endpoint for getting hashrate we could let the miner decide which one to chose on start-up. We think that would be a good idea.

Because of Phan Huong's miner, now Amoveopool2 has >51%
19:51
It is a small update we are requesting from Phan Huong, but they refuse to even communicate with us.
19:53
Sy
ap2 has been close and above 50% for weeks...but i agree, phans miner did give it quite some more hashrate
19:53
but as you said, someone would need 51% for a thousand blocks to launch an attack and you could just fork to prevent it so...what gives?
19:55
Zack
A 51% attack can revert blocks. They can make trades for bitcoin, and then revert the veo payment.
51% of mining power in one pool is very bad.
20:01
Sy
if you get a few in a row, yes
20:02
more pools and miners will come, just relax and wait
20:02

20:03

OK can revert any payment he wants.
He could repeatedly sell veo and then undo the payments to get his veo back.

20:04
its in our best interest
20:05

20:05
We might as well just be using a central computer run by OK.
20:06
Sy
he is barely above 50%
20:06
108 54.55% amoveopool2
20:06

20:06
and it would only damage the entity you want to be gone anyway
20:06
Zack
Maybe we can pay OK to change the URL for submitting work.
Then Phan Huong will stop getting paid until the fixes it.
20:08

20:08
I don't know if it's him, probably a good chance it's not
20:08
Zack
@potat_o Would you consider changing the url for submitting work?
There is a problem with Phan Huong's miner where we can't change which mining pool it joins.
By changing your url, we can force him to update the code

I thought addresses could only start with B
07:46
Zack
I thought so too
07:46
there is rule about that though.
07:47
an address is a 65-byte binary that conforms to the ecdsa standards for pubkeys. and we convert it in base64.
I think the base64 conversion does some padding that could cause the B at the front.
I know ecdsa only has 33 bytes of freedom, so it could be limited in a way so that the first byte has to end up converting to a B.
07:48
I think I am going to have the exchange depend upon a bitcoin full node.
07:48
its just that they take so long to sync.
07:49
Maybe I should use a bitcoin light node, since all we really need is to look at the bitcoin blocks one at a time and scan the transactions.
07:49
O K
Does only the person running the exchange need the full node, or users too?
07:50
Zack
just the person running the exchange.
They also need an amoveo full node.
07:50
the people using the exchange just visit a webpage.

Can an invalid address receive funds, or could funds be burned by being sent to an invalid address -- or, what's the best way to know if an address is valid?

07:51
Zack
an invalid address can receive funds yes. Any 65-byte binary will be accepted as an address.
07:52
so 0xDEADDEADDEADDEAD could be used as a proof of burn.
07:53
your address is valid if you generated it from your private key, and when you make signatures with the private key, the public key can be used to verify the signatures.
07:53
O K
I just noticed an address that started with a v
07:54

I think we will be able to run the exchange on a $5 per month VPS.
I am optimizing the settings of the bitcoin full node to make it more affordable.

we can prune old blocks for example.

19:41
Zack
Which country should I put the server in?
19:45
thats an interesting questions, im pretty sure there are countries with no taxes on capital gains
19:46
Zack
this isn't capital gains though, it is income.
19:46
Zack
I can keep almost all the money off the server to make sure that capital gains happens elsewhere.
19:47
If I do a small amount of mining pool operation in lots of different countries, maybe I can be in a low tax bracket in all of them.

that was a bad link. none of their locations were in monaco.
20:09
Maybe Russia is best. Their tax is pretty low.
20:09
and there are lots of VPS
20:09
It seems to me that Germany is a territorial tax country, so they don't tax income that comes from outside the country.
20:10
Sy
you have to tax it wherever generated and then declare it as already taxed xD
20:10
O K
I mean most places tax profits I'd imagine
20:11
Zack
the money was generated by the miner, and the miner is making a small payment to the pool
20:11
O K
So if your cost to operate (factor in paying yourself, which happens in another jurisdiction) is the same as the income, then there is no profit
20:11
Sy
in theory i should have to declare what i earn and thats it...
20:11
O K
Doesn't apply to sy, but to Zack
20:11

for the world i might be paying "subcontractors" or something, hence have to make sure taxes are paid

Sorry, not me. I've had veominer running for several days without a crash like that (windows/nvidia). I think someone wrote a batch file that restarts the miner. I can't recall who has that, but a batch file that restarts the miner might help your scenario.

01:12
I don't think a bad CPU should just get hot like that if your cooling system is working correctly. Maybe someone else can chime in, but the fact that it's getting hot and turns on says to me: CPU works, cooling does not
01:12

03:00

i think the block propagation is sometimes not optimal, my pool keeps finding a valid block, submitting it, working on that same height for another 10 minutes because its still not accepted by the nodes, finding it again and then it usually sticks
03:00
or it gets orphaned xD
03:03
O K
Like if some nodes are only connected through some bottleneck node
03:03
Zack
I don't understand.
You are saying that your node doesn't build on top of the work it found?
03:03
Sy
thats my conclusion
03:04
i see that the pool found a block candidate which gets submitted to the node as block
03:04
but the height doesnt change for quite some time
03:04
so it must get refused somehow or the broadcast didnt work
03:04
Zack
If your node didn't load the block you found into your own database, then it would be impossible for the block to be shared to anyone else.
03:05
Zack
Why do you think the height isn't increasing?
Maybe you are looking at
veoscan.io, and it just takes
veoscan.io a while to refresh
03:06
Sy
seriously? i sent you a screenshot of my pool finding a valid block for the same height TWICE within 4 minutes
03:06
i dont know why it isnt increasing but it doesnt
03:06
this should be two different blocks
03:06
Zack
I don't understand what that screens shot is of, or what software generated it.
03:07
Zack
Your pool is closed source right?
03:07
Sy
there is no magic in sending a block to the node
03:08
Zack
I don't know what you mean by "Sending a block to a node".
I still don't understand what the problem is.
03:09
cant make it any clearer than i did
03:09
Zack
If the mining pool loads a block into the hard drive, then potential_block.erl deletes the old potential block and makes a new one.
It isn't possible for the same node to generate 2 blocks at the same height.
03:10
Maybe your mining pool has more than one amoveo full node
03:10
Since it is closed source, I don't know.
03:11
Sy
the mining pool finds a block, submits it to the node just like every pool out there does, the pool keeps asking for work and block:height() and it doesnt increase because the first submit never became a block
03:11
since the pool in general is working fine, we found over a thousand blocks i assume the node is sometimes loosing it somewhere
03:12
Sy
thus not increasing the height it returns
03:12
we are noticing it more often lately...also an increased rate of orphans but i think thats just bad luck
03:14
Zack
The mining pool I wrote submits nonces to the full node. Not blocks.
I guess your mining pool is pretty different
03:15
Sometimes the full node changes the potential block you are working on, and then the old nonce is no longer valid.
03:16
O K
That is timer based, yes?
03:16
Zack
Like if your full node included more transactions for example. Then it would need to make make a new potential block to work on, and the old work would be invalid
03:16
Yeah, it only adjusts the potential block every minute or 90 seconds or something like that.
03:26
Sy
i said "as every other pool does" so it submits nonces aswell, sorry that i didnt use the exact correct words
03:26
Zack
I've been thinking it would be better to keep a couple recent potential blocks around, so if you submit an expired nonce, it isn't wasted.
03:27
Sy
the nonce changes every 30s
03:27
i was wondering about that...why?
03:27
Zack
So is your problem that you are finding nonces and there is no valid block for the nonce?
03:28
im going to check with my dev what the node replies are after a nonce submit and if he works with those answers
03:28
Zack
Can you just tell me what you are seeing, and how it is different from what you expect? Then maybe I can figure out what is wrong.
03:29
The potential block needs to be updated if there are new txs to be included for example.
03:29
Sy
i see a nonce submit to the node and the height doesnt increase for up to 20 minutes, i see another nonce submit for the same block height later which usually results in a new block
03:30
what are the potential repllies from the node after a nonce submit?
03:30
Zack
Yes. I think it is a stale nonce then. The potential-block.erl gen server already changed the block being worked on.
03:31
The node returns 0 whether the nonce is accepted or not.
03:32
But mining_data will return something different if the block was accepted.
03:41
so the question is, why does the node return 0 either way?
03:41
i mean it will check the noce vs local data and either accept or reject it, cant you return the usual "ok" or "nope"?
03:42
O K
would prefer "ok" or "died!died!died!"
03:43
Seems like a good idea
04:00
Sy
it gets kinda annoying...
04:00
Zack can you please update the reply after a submit with ok and no or whatever you prefer so i can actually rule out another error?
05:05

I'm looking into it.

05:35
O K
Will this affect classic/master/shares mining pools?
05:35
Zack
Hmm. I should have tested that.
05:36
Let me check right now.
05:36
O K
I don't think it's very urgent
05:44
Zack
I tried it out. The mining pool still seems to work normally.
06:25
Sy
i am getting more and more orphaned block candidate nonces
06:25
not sure why...ill keep an eye on it
08:27
Zack
I just did an update that should significantly decrease orphaned blocks.
08:28
O K
What's the gist of it?
08:32
Zack
Before we checked every 40 seconds to see if we should make a new block.
Now it updates immediately when there is a new block, and it waits 60 seconds to update the block if there are new txs.
08:32
So it also reduces wasted mining time significantly
08:32
O K
Did it used to update immediately when there was a new block?
08:35
Will you point me to the line of code added for the 'new block update immediately'?
08:35
I know where the timer is
08:35
Zack
Oh right, it was updating elsewhere in the code.
We weren't wasting 40 seconds of mining on each block
08:35
O K
Okay, I had a feeling
08:36
Zack
Well, it is immediate from the users perspective.
It is lazy-style programming. So we check if we need to update at the last moment before returning the result.
08:36
In potential_block:read ().
08:36
I'm getting a little better at reading erlang

08:39
You can use github to see exactly what I changed in the 2 most recent commits.
08:41
It gets called every time you lookup the potential block.
08:42
Notice how the part that checks for new transactions is inside the time limit conditional. So you only compare txs every 60 seconds.
08:45
O K
I should start reading the commits more often, the changes help solidify things
08:49

Higher for buyers, lower for sellers
03:15
Mr Flintstone
my guess is higher for both lol
03:15
I have heard stories of new coins tanking relative to otc price when they were exchange listed
03:15

Good chance of that too actually

Mr Flintstone
but these were mostly premined I think?
03:16
Iridescence
OTC introduces friction in price discovery
03:16
Public exchanges remove that friction
03:17
It is more likely that price will be lower after exchange listing than before
03:17
Because people hype up the exchange listing
03:17
Mr Flintstone
letβs bet
03:17
we can actually make a market on this
03:17
O K
Should make two markets
03:19
Mr Flintstone
how do you describe the question in a way that oracle participants can easily come to agreement
03:19
Iridescence
Just set it relative to a date
03:19
O K
Could be easily manipulated eh
03:20
The price at block x is higher than y.
03:20
That should be the question, but how is price determined
03:20
Mr Flintstone
you can use a schelling point I feel like
03:20
And just simply say the price is higher than x
03:21
as long as itβs not ambiguous people wonβt have an issue betting in the oracle
03:21
Iridescence
Yeah, but how is price determined on OTC?
03:21
Mr Flintstone
well isnβt the point that we want this to be post exchange listing?
03:21
O K
OTC I think we can all agree sellers are asking around or over 200 and buyers are bidding around or below 150?
03:23
Mr Flintstone
oh good point you would need to be relative to the prior price, which is otc
03:23
O K
So, on block x the price is above $175 ?
03:23
Mr Flintstone
or you could just say β price will be over 150 usd on an exchange at block xβ
03:23
and then another market that is
03:24
βVeo will be listed on an exchange at block xβ
03:24
O K
you could do over/under
03:24
Iknow Zack is interested in the "on an exchange" market because he wants people to bet against him to incentivize him to get it done :)
03:25
Imo the more markets and participation the better
03:25
Mr Flintstone
i think zacks exchange will be command line
03:25
right? Could be wrong
03:25
O K
I don't think so, it will be like the web wallet
03:25
Mr Flintstone
hmm, with an order book and everything? Like itβll look like a normal exchange?
03:26
O K
Like shapeshift
04:12
Zack
I will probably reuse tools from the Web wallet to make the interface for the exchange.
I might even reuse the volume depth chart from the Explorer.
04:13
I already have enough incentive to make the exchange.
This will make amoveo much more useful for prediction market.

in ~1 day, the bitcoin full node with pruning=550 synced 99% of the blocks.
This is better than I was expecting.
The VPS has 4 gb ram and 2 vcpu on digital ocean.
I am running an amoveo full node on the same machine, and it is operating normally.

Hi guys I'm very new to mining but came across this project and very much want to be involved. Any tips on which rig to purchase/ website to learn more about the process

Thank you!! It is greatly appreciated :)
01:06
I P
well amd miner gets 1.4GHs from RX580. 1060 gets like what, 1.3? i mean amd is not that bad at veo, also amd are good at ethash and cryptonightv7
01:06
os i would argue that statement 'get nvidia not amd'
01:07
Sy
and how long did you amd guys wait for a miner? π
01:07
while i was enjoying my nvidia veo...
01:07
I P
cpu is not important for sure but it is better to have a cheap i5 if for some reason you will mine smth that also needs some cpu power
01:07
i have 50/50 nvidia amd
01:08
I P
yeah i3-8100 is like and i5
01:08
Sy
feel free to suggest something different, thats what my rigs look like and its working out fine for me :)
01:08
ofc it is thats why i posted it, its cheaper
01:09
I P
well the cheapest way is to go for used cpu+mobo combo like on amd fx
01:09
Sebsebzen
Zack are you still looking into tromp's cuckoo cycle PoW? Or was that shelved
01:09
I P
they are very cheap now, the ones that are for 4gpus
01:09
O K
I'm usually biased toward AMD (only slightly, because in the past it was a better Linux card) but now I admit I'm a bit unhappy with lack of AMD support for Vegas on Linux
01:10
These things tend to go in cycles though, a year ago you would have struggled with Nvidia in a lot of cases

I have never talked about using that. I have consistently said it is a bad idea.

Ok, I know it's from the last project time, haven't followed up
01:17
what's your view on Merkle Tree PoW (MTP)?
01:17
Zack
Even at aeternity. I consistently said cuckoo cycle is bad.
We don't want to reward the hackers for making zombies.
01:18
Economically speaking, if we only pay zombie pools, then the marginal cost of the most successful zombie pool will be practically zero.
It is about the lowest efficiency possible.
01:19
Sebsebzen
sorry, MTP by Biryukov and Khovratovich
01:28
Zack
This isn't a pow mechanism, it is a list of goals.
And they aren't good goals, they don't even consider the marginal cost of mining.
They are fixated on inequality in cost per hash for different people, something that does not matter for the success of the blockchain at all.
01:30

Sure, just interested in your point of view

Hi all, from what I gather there is no place to buy Amoveo right now but the dev is working on a custom exchange - is that correct?

ok, that's good to know. is it true that there will be some sort of automated exchange soon? I think I read somewhere that he is working on one

About the exchange.
The bitcoin full node doesn't download transactions with recent blocks.
By default you have none of the transactions.
Your only choices, as far as I can tell are: all of the transaction, or none of them.
but it does give me the hashes of the txs.
So I guess I will download the txs from other sources? is that a reasonable strategy?
Or maybe I should trust in bitcoin's built-in address book to keep track of everyone's balances?
05:10
I wonder if
blockchain.info will block me if I download every tx that gets included in a block.
05:12
I P
yeah looks like you need to download blockchain but you can prune it
05:12
Zack
I did the pruning.
The txs are way bigger txindex=1 makes it huge.
05:13
O K
Cost prohibitive?
05:13
Zack
it would make it much less convenient to use and build.
I would have to wait days for it to sync just to test it.
I want to get it working before then.
05:14
I think we should go with one of the other 2 strategies I listed:
1) ask
blockchain.info for all the txs
2) use bitcoin core's built in address book.
05:16
I think the address book is the quickest solution, so I guess we will try that first.
05:16
O K
I trust your judgment
05:16
Zack
when you do "getnewaddress" in bitcoin, it is storing your private key right?
05:17
How come it keeps making addresses that start with a 3?
05:20
O K
I've not run bitcoin core in a very long time, but 3 addresses iirc, are segwit addresses, and most wallets these days seem to make new addresses based off of your BIP (whatever #) seed β the collection of words that is your account
05:20
Maybe someone can correct me
05:21
Zack
I think the 3 is because it is PS2H type address
05:29
O K
P2SH stands for βPay to script hashβ. Segregated Witness accounts and multisig accounts use these addresses.
Good to know

The block reward is set by the governance mechanism. We cannot predict what the community will decide to do.
08:17
I P
right now i guess community is not going to change it
08:18
O K
I think he was asking about a supply limit, which is somewhat different than the block reward
08:18
I suppose that could also be a governance variable
08:20
CryptoMach
yes I was asking about supply limit...
09:03
Mr Flintstone
there is no supply limit
09:06
O K
If you make some assumptions and extrapolations though...
09:11
BTC max is 21,000,000 (theoretical, the actual is less of course) ... How long would it take Amoveo to get there with 10 minute blocks? That's 175,000,000 (210,000,000 / 1.2) minutes (right?). Or over 300 years. So if you think about what your crypto-lifespan is, you can come up with some upper limit. So maybe the upper limit is not so important.

Gregster joined group by link from Group

My short term plan is to build a bitcoin-Veo exchange.
Other people have other plans.
08:37
My long term plan has some steps.
1) find a small group of people who can use amoveo for something.
2) focus on that small group, make amoveo completely comfortable for them.
3) study how they use amoveo, and make a plan to scale up for more users. Probably rename the project at this point.
08:38
Guillermo Joya
How can I profit financially from Amoveo ?
08:38
Zack
Amoveo is already profitable for many of us
08:38

How can I get involved?
08:39

You could mine amoveo, or run a mining pool, or run an exchange, or run an amoveo powered market where other users can gamble. Or you could run a lightning payment node to facilitate payments.
08:39

Lol and u claimed with ur nick that you're an expert. LMAO

I wanted the code to be readable by many people.
Very few people can read haskell. It takes months to gain that skill.
You can learn enough erlang to read erlang in a couple days.
20:11

Also because of the OTP gen_servers in erlang.
They simultaneously allow these things:
1) concurrency
2) code that can be easily edited without breaking

We have passing tests for the order book.
Now that the difficult algebra is done, we should have an easy time finishing up this exchange.
22:07
I P
so if i got it right after reading descrtiption it requires sending btc and veo to an escrow and after trade fails or completes escrow released funds?
22:07
Sy
thats how i got it too
22:08
you basicly place the order with funds in the exchange order by order
22:09
but how do i unlock them? timed only?
22:09
I P
but this means that you need to pay fees each time, right? btc and veo sending fees
22:10
Zack
Not everything is decided yet. My current plan was to have a timer that you set up before you fund the trade.
If the trade doesn't get matched before the timer runs out, then you get a refund instead.
22:10
O K
Probably would get a lot of attention if could eventually implement BTC lightning network
22:10
BTC people are excited to share any BTC lightning implementations
22:11
Zack
Amoveo already supports 2-hop lightning payments.
22:11
with the light node.
22:11
O K
I meant as a means of exchanging from BTC to amoveo, opening channels with exchange
22:12
I P
or the other way is to make veo/ltc exchange
22:12
Zack
Atomic swaps are one half of the problem. It is good to make the actual exchange trustless.
But if we don't also make the determination of the price trustless, then it doesn't help us much.
22:13
O K
I like BTC better
22:13
Zack
That is why I think we should first make a bitcoin synthetic asset on Amoveo.
Then you could trade the synthetic bitcoin for regular bitcoin at 1:1 price using an atomic swap.
22:14
You can use Amoveo markets to trade Veo for synthetic bitcoin at the correct market price.
22:15
Sy
you still have to trust the node to stay alive dont you? someone has to start the exchange after all - can he steal the funds?
22:16
Zack
With the market smart contract I wrote for Amoveo channels, if the central node goes off-line for too much time, then the central node loses all the contracts in all the channels.
It is turing complete, so you can write markets that work differently.
22:17
O K
Personally I will be using Zack's implementation of the exchange
22:17
At least for the foreseeable future
22:28
Sy
if it is working, sure why not
22:29
jumpy btc price sux a bit for longer deals but we'll see
22:30
it would be nice if we could cancel orders before they get matched, but it is a little hard to do that securely. I don't want other people to be able to cancel your order.
22:31
Maybe you should sign a message using the private key for your refund address?
22:32
maybe you should send exactly 1 satoshi from your refund address as a message that you want to cancel the trade?
22:32
Ill put a note about this on the todo list.
22:35
All the trades are limit orders. So it isn't like you will end up trading at a bad price. I think this isn't a critical feature to have in version 1.
